“Yoga Therapy (YT) is the professional application of yogic principles and practices to promote holistic health and well-being within a therapeutic relationship. It includes personalized assessment, goal setting, lifestyle management, and yoga practices for individuals or small groups.” (IAYT)

Practices include pain-free physical exercises, mindful movements, breathwork, relaxation techniques, meditation, and compassionate, trauma-informed conversations. Yoga therapy may also include lifestyle counselling, fun and games as part of its holistic approach.

Nadia approaches issues from a biopsychosocial and emotional perspective, focusing on individuals’ holistic well-being. In doing so, she encompasses knowledge on the body’s biomechanics, organ systems, the nervous system, disease symptoms, progression and prognosis, treatment options, and the side-effects of medication.

As a Yoga Therapist in training, she is trained to recognise when certain poses, breathing techniques, or relaxation methods may be contraindicated. Consequently, she customizes yoga practices based on individual needs, considering various bodily systems and personal aspects.

She also shares an understanding of mental health issues, somatic counselling skills, and approaches work with trauma sensitivity.

Essentially, Nadia believes in the holistic and whole-person approach adapting Yogic principles to provide an inclusive and accessible opportunity to complement medically-oriented treatments.

How Yoga Therapy can help in the holistic approach in the management of chronic pain and mental health illnesses.

While in YT we do not diagnose conditions, our work adopts a biopsychosocial, spiritual and emotional approach making it a holistic form of therapy in itself. However, we also work complimentary to the medical profession, offering a supportive, multi-disciplinary approach.

Here’s how it can help from a scientific perspective:

  1. Modulation of Nociceptors: Yoga therapy can modulate the activity of nociceptors, the nerve receptors responsible for sensing pain. Through carefully thought-out yogic practices, be they, specific postures, breathing techniques or otherwise, YT helps to navigate the perception and/or experience of pain.
  2. Nervous System Regulation: Yoga therapy promotes the balance of the autonomic nervous system by stimulating the parasympathetic state of relaxation. This helps to counteract the fight-or-flight response. This regulation can also help in reducing chronic pain and alleviating symptoms of anxiety and depression. Adopting a trauma-informed approach, we also ensure the management of other health issues whether in physical or mental form, balancing sufficient sensitivity to induce self-awareness and interoception, since trauma may at times cause desensitization and/or a fleeing response.
  3. Neuroplasticity: Engaging in regular yoga practice can contribute to neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections. This adaptability can enhance pain management and improve mental health by rewiring pain pathways and altering emotional responses.
  4. Reduction of Inflammatory Markers: Chronic pain and mental health disorders are often associated with increased levels of inflammation in the body. Yoga therapy has been shown to reduce inflammatory markers, contributing to decreased pain and improved mental well-being.
  5. Endorphin Release: Yoga practice stimulates the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. These endorphins interact with the brain’s pain receptors to reduce the perception of pain and promote a sense of well-being.
  6. Cortisol Reduction: Chronic stress elevates cortisol levels, which can exacerbate pain and mental health issues. Yoga therapy lowers cortisol levels through relaxation and mindfulness techniques, helping to mitigate stress and its negative effects on the body.
  7. Improved Sleep: Poor sleep quality is a common issue in individuals with chronic pain and mental health disorders. Yoga therapy enhances sleep by promoting relaxation and regulating the sleep-wake cycle, leading to better overall health.
  8. Emotional Balance: Regular yoga practice can improve mood and emotional stability through well-planned practices targeting various bodily systems. Techniques such as guided relaxation and mindfulness, tailored movements, and supportive breathing techniques all of which are integral to yoga therapy, have been shown to decrease symptoms of mood disorders as depression and anxiety.
  9. Empowerment and Self-Care: Yoga therapy promotes self-empowerment by encouraging individuals to take an active role in their healing process. It teaches self-care techniques that can be used anytime, providing tools for managing pain and emotional challenges independently.

By incorporating yoga therapy into your pain management plan, you can benefit from its scientifically proven effects on the nervous system, nociceptors, and overall physical and mental health. This approach complements traditional medical treatments, offering a well-rounded strategy to enhance your well-being.
